Yes,
the LabelWriter behaves as a common printer.
2. Is there a maximum number of workstations/users that can use the
printer simultaneously?
No, there is not.
Remarks:
1. Currently, only the DYMO EL Turbo USB, DYMO LabelWriter 330 Turbo,
400, 400 Turbo and Twin Turbo are known to work only with HP 175x
Ethernet USB print server.
DYMO has no knowledge about successfully
connecting the LabelWriter 310, 320 or Duo to this print server.
To
connect successfully:
- Any DYMO EL Turbo with serial number before 17-0064317 will need the
flash upgrade 'flash EL Turbo.exe'
- Any DYMO LabelWriter 330Turbo
with serial number starting with 90793 will need the flash upgrade
'flash 90793v0E.exe'
- Any DYMO LabelWriter 330Turbo with serial
number starting with 90884 does not need a flash upgrade.
-
LabelWriter 400, 400 Turbo and Twin Turbo do not need a flash upgrade.
All
other models should be shared using Microsoft’s printer and file sharing
utilities.
2. Only the DYMO LabelWriter Software version 6.0 or higher is
compatible with the HP 175x Ethernet USB print server.
Procedure:
Below is a procedure to connect the LabelWriter to
this HP print server.
This procedure has been tested successfully
with Microsoft Win98 and Win2000 clients and requires the use of Windows
TCP/IP.
There is no reason to expect any problem using Windows XP.
Windows

step by step guide
Note: If you are sharing your LabelWriter on a Mac network you need to
be running OS 10.1 or higher on all the computers (both local and
remote).
Below are the steps you need to take in order to make your LabelWriter a
shared device on your Mac network. These steps must be preformed on both
the local and remote computer(s).
1. Go to Apple > System Preferences > Sharing
2. Turn Personal File Sharing On
3. Turn Printer Sharing On
4. Close System Preferences
5. Go to Applications > Utilities > Printer Center
6. Open the Printer Center and your LabelWriter should be there
Note: If you can see the printer but you can not print to it then there
may be an issue with the type of network that you have set up. Certain
DNS configurations may prevent this issue from occuring.
To resolve this issue follow the below steps:
1. Go to Apple > Location > Network Preferences
2. In the Search Domain window type local
3. Click Apply Now
LabelWriter 400, 400 Turbo, Twin Turbo and LabelWriter 3xx TrinityII
can also be connected via Airport.
1. Connect the USB printer to the Airport Base Station with the USB cable
2. Open Print Center and press 'Add'
3. In the dropdown select 'Rendezvous'
4. Select your printer and press 'Add'
Yes, it can.
The DYMO Address Book may be located anywhere on a
network.
Anyone with read/write permission to the Address Book, can
access it from DYMO Label Software.
Important note:
The Address Book cannot be shared simultaneously
among multiple users, regardless of access rights.
It is one at a
time.
If it is necessary for multiple users to be able to access the same list
of addresses data, each user will need to have a local copy of the data
that only they access.
Sharing the LabelWriter via another USB print server.
USB Print servers allow USB compatible devices to be shared across an
Ethernet based network. The following models have been tested to work
properly with the LabelWriter 400, LabelWriter 400 Turbo and LabelWriter
Twin Turbo:
Windows Operating System
- NETGEAR USB Mini Print Server (Model Number: PS121)
- Linksys
Wireless &ndash G (Model Number: WPS54G)
- IOGEAR
print server (Model Number: GPSRO1U)
- Airport Extreme Base
Station (Model number: A1034)
- Airport Express (Model number: A1088)
-
HP Jet Direct 175 X
Macintosh Operating System
- Airport Extreme Base Station (Model number: A1034)
- Airport Express
(Model number: A1088)
DYMO does not provide further support for these print servers. However,
we can confirm that the DYMO LabelWriters work the same as any other
printer and require no special configuration of the print servers.
Simply follow the instructions for your USB Print Server as provided by
the USB Print Server manufacturer.
More information:

How to verify the firmware version?
Download this utility:
ftp://ftp.dymo.com/Printer%20Updates/Trinity%20II+%20printers/UsbGetVer.EXE
Solution:
DYMO has not tested this, therefore we have no experience with Terminal
Server systems and don’t support it.
However, we can provide
some further information:
1. To allow client access to Server Printers, the
“automatic printer redirection” feature must be enabled on the server
(enabled by default). (see this article for more details: http://www.microsoft.com/windowsserver2003/techinfo/overview/tsprint.mspx
). The server must be configured to give clients access permission to
the printers.
2. To allow printing on Client Printers, following
these steps: a. Install Printer Drivers on the Server: Client
Printers will only work when the printer drivers are installed
on the Terminal Server. b.Configure the Terminal Server to Connect
Client Printers: after the printer drivers are installed, you need to
configure your Terminal Server to connect clients’ printers when their
terminal service sessions are started (see this article for more
details: http://technet2.microsoft.com/WindowsServer/en/library/32e7017f-7e3e-4d7b-8b31-0eafef355f8e1033.mspx?mfr=true
).

Additionally, here are some customer reports:
1. "It was rather easy to connect the LabelWriter.
Just
keep in mind to install the driver locally on the client. The DYMO
software can than be installed on the Citrix server."
Windows 2003
Server as a standard server is also not supported by our services,
although customers reported it to work.
2. A client reported:"How
to install a DYMO LabelWriter on a terminal server:
Situation:
-
An office with 5 employees on a local network, working on 1 terminal
server.
- 1 DYMO printer connected to workstation.
Solution:
Workstations:
1.
Install the DYMO LabelWriter locally on the workstation and share it. Name
it e.g. DYMO LW
2. Install the DYMO LabelWriter as a network printer on
the other workstations.
Terminal server:
Install the
software and skip the installation of the printer (driver).
When
users log on to the terminal server, it will recognize the printer and the
driver. It's being installed when logging onto the server. Every logged in
user can now use the DYMO.
The workstation with the LabelWriter
connected has to be turned on of course!
3. My problem was the
lack of label no. 99012 when the Twin Turbo driver is installed with
Windows 2003.
I copied all the objects from the 99012-based label
template and pasted them onto a 99014 label which is both wider and longer
than 99012.
The printer roll was set to 99014.
As long as the
objects are in the correct place on the template (top-left corner) the
99014-based label prints correctly on a 99012 label because the label feed
mechanism depends on the label edge markings not the specified length of
label.
These instructions assume that you have already installed DYMO Label
Software on the local computer. See the Quick
Start Guide for
information.

The printer driver used for the LabelWriter is a MS Windows driver.
Therefore,
if the used third-party software is complient to MS Windows, allows to
choose the LabelWriter as printer, allows to change the Page Setup,
recognizes labelsizes, etc, printing to the LabelWriter should be
possible.
If this software does not run in a Windows environment
(e.g. UNIX, Linux, DOS, ...) please refer to the LabelWriter technical
manual.
However, we recommend to print data from another application using
either:
Quick Print for single labels
or
Smart Paste for multiple labels
A. Quick Print
DYMO Label Software provides an option that
allows you to automatically insert text from the clipboard into a label
and then print the label with just a couple of mouse clicks (this option
is referred to as Quick Print). You use the Quick Print option when you
minimize the program to the system tray (called the notification area in
Windows XP). You can choose to minimize the program when you first start
the program or when you click the minimize button.
To select the Quick Print option
1. Choose Preferences from the Edit
menu and click the Functional Settings tab.
The
Functional Settings tab on the Preferences dialog box appears.
2.
Select the Minimize to System Tray check box and the Enable
Quick Print from System Tray check box.
3. Click OK
to close the Preferences dialog box.
To quickly print labels while using another program
1. Make sure the Enable Quick Print from System Tray option and the Minimize
to System Tray or Start Program in System Tray
options are selected in the Preferences dialog box. See the above steps
for information.
2. Minimize DYMO Label Software to the system tray.
3.
Start the desired program (such as Microsoft Word) and then copy
the text you want to print.
4. Right-click the DYMO
icon and choose the Paste & Print command
from the pop-up menu.
TIP:
You can also double-click the DYMO icon in the system tray to paste and
print the label.
DYMO Label Software pastes the text from the clipboard into the current
label and then prints the label.
You can use this technique from any application that allows you to copy
information to the clipboard. You can use it to copy part numbers for
barcode labels, file listings for diskette labels, and more.
B. Smart Paste
1. Copy the data to be printed
2. Start the
DYMO LabelWriter Software
2. Open the label you wish to use.
3.
Select Smart Paste from the Edit menu.
A dialog
box appears telling you how many labels will be printed.
5. Click OK.
The
labels begin printing
MORE INFORMATION
1.
When you use Smart Paste to print multiple labels, the labels will be
formatted using the font, size, and style currently selected for the
label.
2. When pasting rows of text from a spreadsheet program using
Smart Paste, each row is treated as a separate label and each cell in
the row is treated as a separate line on the label.
For example, the rows in the following spreadsheet:
| DYMO CORP | Label Street 1 | Stamford |
| Esselte | Downingstreet | Strijpen |
|
DYMO CORP Label Street 1 Stamford |

Recipient Address. Most of the shipping label templates allow to also
include the return address, (which appears in the address field). Select
the fields in the Outlook database.
To print a contact’s address
using the Outlook Add-In, complete the following steps:
1.Start
up the Outlook Add-In.
Clicking the DYMO icon in the Outlook
toolbar starts the Outlook Add-in.
2.Choose the desired
label template from the Label Template drop-down list.
Several
predefined label templates for address and shipping labels are included
with the Add-In. The address labels contain an object for the
recipient’s address. The shipping label templates also contain an object
for a return address.
To select the label template, click one of the
templates from the Label Templates box.
The type specifications

select the contact(s) whose address(es).
The Outlook Add-In supports
printing labels for the current contact, the currently selected
contacts, all of the contacts in a specified folder, or all of the
contacts in the Outlook contact database. Select the contacts whose
addresses you want to print by choosing one of the Print Label For
options in the lower left-hand corner of the DYMO LabelWriter dialog
box. To use certain options (such as the Current Contact and Current
Selection options), Select the contact(s) you want in the Outlook
database before starting up the Outlook Add-In.
There are several
possibilities:

contacts. To select one or more contacts, click the first contact

The Outlook Add-In works
in the Contacts section of Outlook 2000, XP and 2003.
The LabelWriters are designed to print 2 million inches of thermal labels, which equals more than 500,000 Standard Address labels. Of course, very few people print anywhere near that many. If you were to print 20 labels a day, each day of the year, it would still take you more than 68 years.

Of course the LabelWriters are not designed as photo printers and have
some limitations:
- the LabelWriters 300 and 400 series are limited
to 300 dpi
- the LabelWriters EL40/60/Turbo are limited to to 203 dpi.
-
LabelWriters cannot print grey tones, but rather immitate grey tones by
dithering
As a consequence of these limitations, a LabelWriter cannot give the
same print result as e.g. an inkjet or a laser printer.
Next to that, the quality also depends on the quality of the used
picture/photo. A few hints of changes to pictures that could improve the
print quality:
- reduce the pixels of the used photos into 300 pixels
per inch
- convert the pictures into grey values
- use a bitmap
(.bmp) format
Answer:
Out of the box, the DYMO LabelWriters will not work with Rendezvous.
To use the Label Writer (Trinity II series) with Rendezvous, an Apple
Airport Extreme base station is needed. Other non-Apple third party
devices which claim to be support Rendezvous may also work.
However,
DYMO has not tested these and therefore does not support them.
Solution:
Rendezvous uses industry standard IP protocols to allow devices to
automatically find each other without the need to enter IP addresses or
configure DNS servers. Rendezvous is basically the friendly term for a
protocol called ZeroConf.
The whole idea behind a Rendezvous-ready device is that you could
connect it to your wired/wireless network and the device would
automatically configure itself (ip address, dns, etc) and let every
other computer/device on the network know what it’s functions are
(printer, etc). So the idea is, one can connect a Rendezvous enabled HP
network printer to the network, it would configure itself automatically,
and from any Mac OS 10.2x or later computer, you’d be able to add
it/install it as a Rendezvous printer and print to it across the network
without knowing things like the IP address of the printer and so on.
You can also have Rendezvous-ready/enabled applications…Safari, iTunes,
iChat, etc are all Rendezvous ready. There aren’t a whole lot of
manufacturers supporting Rendezvous yet…but companies like HP, Canon,
Brother, Xerox, Epson are supporting it on some level.
Any manufacturer wishing to offer Rendezvous support through its
hardware can integrate Apple's development software within its devices;
significantly, the software is available not only for Mac and Windows
but also for Linux.
LabelWriters are thermal printers.
Other known examples of thermal
printers are fax machines.
Thermal printing means that the printhead 'burns' the text into the
paper.
As a consequence, the LabelWriters can only print black.
The
advantage is that no ink is needed.
The LabelWriter does not use a font to generate a barcode.
Depending on the entered number, the program calculates the dot
placement for the barcode.
DLS is a non-Unicode application.
Therefore, cannot interpret
Russian, Greek, Cyrillic,... characters and replaces these by ???? .
The
Word Add-in will face the same problem.
However, there are two workarounds.
1. MS Word (like all Office applications) is a Unicode application.
So,
printing directly from Word to the LabelWriter is an option.
2. Work-around to print Russian and other characters from DLS and the
Word Add-in:
Remark: this is only a suggestion. If this affects also
other applications, don't hold us responsible. But it is worth trying
and can always by changed back.
For this, the language for
non-unicode applications needs to be changed.
How to change this?
Click
Start and click Control Panel
Click Country
settings
Click Advanced
Select e.g.
Russian as Language for programs which are not
Unicode-compatible.
Click OK
Reboot
PC.
The serial number is printed on a white label. This label can be found in either the cassette compartment or in the battery compartment.
