Yacht wiring wins this month Neat-O!

John Marrero, director at Energia, Inc. in Stuart, Fla., says the staff ’s experience of performing installations on mega-yachts prepared them well to win the CEDIA Electronic Lifestyles award for Best Dressed System. The award was presented last September to the company for its installation at a 17,000-square-foot South Florida home.

“Yacht installations taught us wiring discipline,”; says Marrero. “They are very similar to high-end commercial work. You have to run wires in trays, and the wiring breaks have to occur at exactly the right spot.”

Marrero says cluttered or messy wiring in a high-end custom installation is like “going out the door with your tux on but not polishing your shoes.”; Although Energia prides itself on clean wiring for every job, Marrero says the award-winning job was special, including some wiring and connectors that the company had not previously used.

The home’s construction took three years from start to finish. For Energia, the job required 255 manhours for design and engineering, 2,400 hours of pre-wire/rough-in time, 1,260 hours for pre-staging the job on racks and testing the equipment, 440 hours for final installation/calibration and more.

In total, the company spent 5,448 hours on the job, which includes a wholehouse Crestron system, Vantage lighting. Genelec speakers, a Mark Levinson processor, Faroudja FPTV, Stewart screen and more. In all, 12 technicians worked on the job. The wiring was kept consistent under the oversight of a project manager.

“Pre-staging the racks back at our facility was the key. We checked everything and just shipped it to the jobsite,” he adds. The job also includes three full binders of documentation, along with the information burned on a CD-ROM.
